Tourniquet
A tourniquet is a device used to apply firm pressure around a limb to stop severe, life-threatening bleeding.
If you mean how to use a tourniquet for life-threatening limb bleeding, use a commercial windlass tourniquet if available:
1. Call emergency services and get help.
2. Expose the wound and apply firm direct pressure if you can.
3. Place the tourniquet 5–7 cm (2–3 in) above the wound, or high and tight on the limb if you cannot identify the wound. Never place it directly over a joint.
4. Tighten the strap firmly until bleeding stops.
5. Twist the windlass rod until bleeding completely stops, then secure the rod.
6. Note the time the tourniquet was applied.
7. Do not loosen or remove it yourself. Keep the person warm and wait for emergency medical care.
A properly applied tourniquet can be very painful, but do not loosen it because of pain. If bleeding continues, a second tourniquet can be placed above the first one.
